The Strawberry Soccer Match
The spring afternoon was warm and breezy, and the kitchen was filled with the golden light of the setting sun. Lyn walked through the front door carrying a small, brown paper bag. Even before she opened it, a wonderful, sugary aroma filled the room.
"Look, everyone! I found a surprise at the market," Lyn announced. "I bought the very first strawberries of the spring season!"
She opened the bag to reveal a dozen magnificent berries. They were huge, heart-shaped, and colored a deep, vibrant red. Linda, wearing her favorite green blouse, immediately took them to the sink. Splash, splash! She rinsed them in cool water until they sparkled like rubies. She placed them carefully into a beautiful white ceramic bowl in the center of the kitchen table.
Star, the Shiba Inu, was already sitting perfectly still, her nose twitching at the sweet scent. Lyn picked up a small, ripe piece and held it out. Chomp! Star took it gently and chewed with a happy expression, her fluffy tail wagging like a metronome.
"She definitely approves of the spring harvest," Linda laughed, leaning against the counter.
Next, it was Pinkysan’s turn. Lyn placed one large, round strawberry on the floor in front of the calico kitten. "Here you go, Pinkysan. A sweet treat for a sweet cat."
Pinkysan didn't eat it. Instead, she crouched low, her ears tilted forward. She sniffed the berry suspiciously. To her, this wasn't food—it was a strange, bumpy red intruder. Suddenly, her paw flicked out with lightning speed. Biff!
The strawberry zipped across the smooth kitchen tiles. Pinkysan’s eyes went wide with excitement. She didn't want to taste the fruit; she wanted to win a game! She chased after it, sliding on the floor.
"Oh no! It’s a snack, not a toy, Pinkysan!" Lyn cried out, but it was too late.
The "Strawberry Soccer Match" had officially begun. Pinkysan batted the berry toward the legs of the kitchen table. Star, seeing the movement, decided she wanted to be the goalkeeper. She barked a playful "Woof!" and lunged forward. Thump, thump, thump! The sound of paws and claws echoed through the kitchen as the two pets scrambled under the furniture.
The poor strawberry was being passed back and forth like a professional soccer ball. Pinkysan used her claws to "dribble" it past Star’s nose, and Star used her chest to block it from going into the hallway.
"Wait! Stop! The floor is getting red spots!" Lyn laughed, finally catching the dusty, bruised strawberry near the refrigerator.
She picked up the "ball" and shook her head. It was no longer fit for a queen’s snack. Lyn washed her hands and decided it was time for a change of plans. She gave the pets their proper, crunchy treats instead—the ones that didn't roll away.
"Strawberries are for eating quietly, not for world-class soccer matches," Lyn whispered, stroking Pinkysan’s head.
Star and Pinkysan sat side-by-side, panting happily from their exercise. They watched as Lyn and Linda enjoyed the rest of the bowl with some cream. In their house, spring was not only delicious but also the funniest season of all.
