The Guardian and garden surprise

2026-04-26

The Sunday morning sun was warm and golden, casting long shadows across the grass. The air was alive with the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and the cheerful songs of spring birds.

"Today is the day!" Lyn declared, standing in the center of the yard. "We are going to plant our very own vegetable and flower garden."

Lyn looked ready for hard work. She was wearing a crisp white t-shirt under a stylish blue denim jumper skirt. In her hand, she gripped a sturdy garden shovel. Beside her, Linda was dressed in a practical, comfortable gray house dress with a clean white apron tied around her waist. They both sat on small wooden stools, their fingers busy pressing tiny black seeds into the rich, dark soil.

"You’re doing a great job, Star!" Lyn cheered.

Star, the Shiba Inu, was perhaps the most stylish gardener in Japan. She was wearing a beautiful pink spring dress that fluttered in the breeze. However, she wasn't afraid to get dirty! Her nose was already covered in brown soil as she used her powerful front paws to dig. Thump, thump, thump! She dug small, perfect holes in a straight line, moving much faster than any human could. Thanks to Star’s "super digging," the planting was going very quickly.

A few meters away, Pinkysan sat as still as a statue on a flat, sun-warmed rock. The calico cat wasn't interested in digging. Instead, she was on "Guardian Duty." Her sharp green eyes were locked onto a group of hungry sparrows waiting in a nearby tree. Every time a bird flew too close to the fresh seeds, Pinkysan would give a low, protective growl. She was the brave guardian of the garden.

Hours passed, and the sun began to sink toward the horizon, painting the sky in beautiful shades of orange and purple. The long rows of soil were finally full of seeds, neatly tucked away under the earth.

Lyn wiped her forehead and let out a long sigh. "I am exhausted," she admitted. "My back is tired, and I am incredibly thirsty."

Linda leaned back against the rustic wooden bench at the edge of the garden. "Me too, Lyn. My throat feels as dry as the soil. Let’s rest for a moment."

They sat together, watching the sunset. Star flopped down at their feet, her pink dress a little dusty and her nose completely brown from her hard work. She was a very tired, but very happy, "lemon-dog."

Suddenly, Linda gasped and pointed toward the house. Pinkysan was walking across the lawn, but she was moving very strangely. She was walking slowly and carefully, keeping her back perfectly level.

"Is that... a tray?" Linda whispered in disbelief.

Balanced perfectly on Pinkysan’s back was a small, flat wooden tray. On top of the tray sat two glasses filled to the brim with clear, ice-cold water. Purr, purr, purr! Pinkysan made a soft sound as she approached the bench. She moved like a professional waitress, her tail held high for balance.

When she reached the bench, she slowly lowered her body until the tray touched the wooden slats. The glasses didn't spill a single drop!

"Oh my goodness, Pinkysan! You are amazing!" Lyn cried out in joy. She grabbed a glass and took a long drink. Gulp, gulp! The water was cold and refreshing.

Linda took her glass too, her eyes wide with wonder. "Thank you, Pinkysan! You are the most thoughtful cat in the world."

Lyn pulled the clever calico into a big, loving hug. Pinkysan responded with a happy Meow! They all sat together on the bench—two tired women, one dusty dog, and one very proud cat. They had a new garden growing in the ground and a perfect family growing in their hearts.
