The adventure in high tree
Spring was in full bloom, and Pinkysan was feeling wonderful. Thanks to the medicine and the extra love from Lyn, Linda, and Star, she was healthy and full of energy once again. She no longer spent her days crying for her mother. Instead, she spent every minute looking for a new adventure.
One sunny Tuesday afternoon, the garden was quiet. Lyn was reading a book on the porch, and Star was napping in the shade of a large, ancient oak tree. This tree was the king of the garden. Its branches were thick, and its green leaves reached high into the blue sky.
Pinkysan trotted over to the base of the tree. she looked up, her green eyes sparkling with curiosity. She sharpened her tiny claws on the rough bark—scritch, scratch, scritch—and then, she began to move.
Climb, climb, climb! Pinkysan moved like a little professional athlete. She was incredibly fast! Before Lyn could even look up from her book, the tiny calico kitten was already five meters above the ground. She didn’t stop there. She kept going until she reached a very high branch near the very top of the tree.
Suddenly, a loud sound broke the silence. "Woof! Woof! Woof!"
It was Star. The big Shiba Inu had woken up and realized her little sister was in trouble. Star stood at the bottom of the tree, looking up with a very worried expression. Her tail was down, and she paced back and forth. In "dog language," she was shouting, "Pinkysan! It is far too high! It is dangerous! Please come down right now!"
But Pinkysan was having too much fun. She felt like the queen of the world. From the top of the tree, she could see over the garden fence and all the way to the park down the street. She let out a happy "mew" and began to bat at a fluttering leaf, completely unaware of the height.
Lyn heard Star’s frantic barking and ran out of the house, followed closely by Linda. When Lyn looked up and saw the tiny ball of fur so high in the air, her face turned pale.
"Oh my goodness! Pinkysan!" Lyn cried out, her heart beating fast. "Please be careful! Linda, what should we do? She’s too high for us to reach!"
Linda looked worried, but Lyn suddenly had a clever idea. She knew that Pinkysan’s stomach was often stronger than her bravery. "Linda, stay here and watch her. I’ll be right back!"
Lyn hurried into the kitchen and grabbed two things: a small tin of premium, smelly tuna cat food and a large, delicious marrow bone for Star. She ran back to the garden and popped the lid of the tuna tin. The salty, fishy aroma drifted up into the branches of the oak tree.
"Pinkysan, look! I have your favorite yummy treats!" Lyn called out, waving the tin. "And Star, look! A big reward for being such a good guard dog!"
Pinkysan’s pink nose began to twitch. She stopped playing with the leaf and looked down. The smell was irresistible! Her tummy let out a little growl. Realizing she was hungry, she began her descent. It was much slower than the climb up. Scritch, scratch, scritch. She moved backwards, carefully placing her paws on the bark until—thump!—she landed safely on the soft grass.
Lyn let out a huge sigh of relief and immediately gave Pinkysan the tuna. She handed the big bone to Star, who wagged her tail so hard her whole body shook. The two pets sat side-by-side, eating their snacks with great enthusiasm.
Nom, nom, nom! Purr, purr, purr! The sound of them eating and purring together sounded like a happy spring song. Lyn looked at her "big sister" dog and her "little sister" cat and started to laugh.
"What a funny, dramatic family we have," she said to Linda. "I think we need to keep the garden gate closed—and maybe keep an eye on that tree!"
