The Arrival of Rainy Season in Nara

2026-05-26

The warm spring days were suddenly replaced by a persistent, grey cloud cover. In Nara, this meant only one thing: the arrival of tsuyu, Japan's unique rainy season.

Pretty Lyn stood by the window of the grand Nara Hotel, watching the persistent downpour. Her neat bangs were slightly flat from the humidity, and her long light brown hair was tied back professionally. Her shift as a front desk clerk had been incredibly busy and physically exhausting. All day, she had attended to guests arriving wet and tired. Now, it was her turn to head home.

Unfortunately, in the chaotic rush of the day, Lyn had forgotten her personal umbrella at home. Stepping outside, the cold, wet air instantly chilled her. By the time she made it to the train station and finally to her street, her crisp dark blue uniform jacket was darkened and soaked through. A cold wind made her shiver violently.

Meanwhile, back at the traditional wooden house, the household was also adjusting to tsuyu. Pinkysan, the calico cat, had spent the afternoon searching for the perfect cool and dry location. After trying several spots, she settled on a high wooden shelf near the doorway, logic dictating it was safe from drafts. She looked cute and comfy, wearing a miniature denim jumper over a white t-shirt.

In the doorway, Linda was acting as the family coordinator. Wearing a comfortable brown dress and a clean white apron, she stood crouched, surrounded by a strategic line of colorful umbrellas, ensuring everything was in perfect order for the rainy week ahead. Suddenly, her face turned to warm concern. Through the open sliding door, she saw a wet figure running up the stone path, trying unsuccessfully to dodge the heavy rain. It was Lyn!

"Lyn! You're completely soaked!" Linda cried out.

Linda instantly rushed forward with a large dark blue traditional umbrella. Reaching Lyn just as she hit the driveway, Linda wrapped her arms around her shivering friend, supporting her. The two girls moved quickly back into the warm, dry doorway, Pinkysan watching the commotion with wide eyes.

Once inside, Lyn was still visibly cold. Her face was pale, and she continued to shiver. Seeing Lyn in such a miserable state, Star, the proud Akita Inu, came trotting over, letting out a cheerful bark and wagging her tail happily. Star didn't care about the rain; she was just dynamic and happy to see Lyn again!

"Lyn, your clothes are freezing," Linda said, her voice filled with sympathy. "You must warm up immediately. Go take a long hot bath!"

Lyn looked at the excited Akita and had a brilliant idea to cheer herself up. "Star, want to join me for an ofuro?"

In many traditional Japanese homes, the family dog sometimes joins their owner in the hot bath. Star tilted her head, wagged her tail, and gave an immediate bark.

Lyn quickly changed out of her uniform and slipped into the steaming, cedar-wood ofuro (bath tub). The hot water instantly sent a wave of relief through her body. With another soft bark, Star carefully stepped into the shallow end of the water. The heat felt strange but satisfying on the dog's thick fur.

A few minutes later, the sound of laughter and singing began to fill the bathroom.

"You look like a giant drowned mouse, Star!" Lyn giggled, open-mouthed with happiness.

Star simply let out an intermediate bark and splashes her tail, performing a dynamic and happy ofuro dance. Lyn joined in, and soon they were both singing a popular anime theme song at the top of their lungs, completely open-mouthed and joyful. The sound of their shared singing drifted through the house.

Meanwhile Linda prepared a delicious Minestrone soup for their dinner and everyone enjoyed eating and sleep well because of cold weather.
