The Big Birthday Party
The sun rose over a garden that was sparkling with morning dew. It was exactly one year since that fateful, rainy afternoon when a tiny, shivering kitten was found at the iron gate.
"Good morning! Happy Birthday, Pinkysan!" Lyn shouted as she entered the living room. She picked up the calico cat and gave her a gentle squeeze. "One year ago today, you were as small as a tennis ball. Now, look at you! You are a big, beautiful, and very clever cat."
The weather was absolutely perfect for an outdoor celebration. Lyn, wearing her favorite white dress with the pink ribbon, and Linda, in her purple blouse, spent the whole morning preparing the garden. They tied colorful balloons—bright red, ocean blue, and sunshine yellow—to the wooden fence.
"Does this look okay, Lyn?" Linda asked, adjusting a "Happy Birthday" banner between two sakura trees.
"It’s perfect!" Lyn replied. She then turned her attention to the guests of honor. Pinkysan was wearing a tiny, glittery party hat held on by a soft elastic band. Even Star, the big Shiba Inu, was part of the fashion show; she wore a giant, shiny silk ribbon around her neck that matched Pinkysan’s hat.
But a party is not a party without friends! Pinkysan had invited three of her kitten friends from the neighborhood. There was Kuro, a sleek black cat; Mochi, a chubby white cat; and Ginger, a playful orange tabby. They all arrived at the garden gate, tails twitching with excitement.
In the center of the lawn stood a low table decorated with a checkered cloth. On the table was the masterpiece: a special "pet-safe" birthday cake. Linda had spent hours making it out of mashed sweet potatoes and fresh tuna. It smelled delicious—at least to the cats!
Everyone gathered around the table. The neighborhood kittens sat in a polite circle, and Star sat tall and proud next to Lyn.
"Okay, everyone, it’s time to sing!" Lyn announced.
Lyn and Linda began to sing loudly: "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday, dear Pinkysan..."
The "concert" was very funny. Star joined in with a rhythmic, "Woof, woof, woof!" and the four kittens added a chorus of high-pitched, "Meow, meow, meow!" It was the loudest and happiest song the neighborhood had ever heard.
On top of the cake was one single, small candle. The flame flickered in the spring breeze.
"Make a wish, Pinkysan!" Lyn whispered.
Pinkysan leaned her head forward, her whiskers twitching. Her pink nose got very close to the flame and—Whoosh!—she gave a quick sniff that blew the candle out perfectly.
"Yay! She did it!" Lyn clapped her hands, and Linda cheered.
Then, the feast began. Pinkysan, her three friends, and even Star shared the fishy cake. They spent the rest of the afternoon chasing butterflies and playing games in the tall green grass. Pinkysan paused for a moment and looked at Lyn, Linda, and Star. She remembered being cold and alone at the gate, but that felt like a lifetime ago. Now, she had a name, a home, and a family. She was truly the happiest cat in the world.
