The Sakura Sky chase
The afternoon sun was warm, and the entire city seemed to be covered in a soft pink cloud. Lyn, Linda, Star, and Pinkysan had arrived at their local park, and it was the most beautiful day of the year. Hundreds of sakura (cherry blossom) trees were in full bloom. The petals drifted gently through the warm air like light spring snow.
"Look at all this space, Linda!" Lyn said, her blue eyes gleaming with excitement. "This is the perfect place for our adventure."
Lyn looked lovely in a new spring outfit: comfortable blue pants and a bright, cheerful yellow spring blouse. Linda was ready for action, too, wearing durable blue denim maong pants and a lovely green spring blouse with a flower pattern. Even Star, the Shiba Inu, was dressed for the occasion, wearing a beautiful, ruffled pink spring dress that matched her floral harness.
"Okay, is everyone ready?" Linda asked, reaching into a large canvas tote bag. She pulled out four wooden spools of string and four colourful kites.
They had spent all morning preparing. Lyn had chosen a kite with a smiling sakura blossom design. Linda’s kite was a strong, geometric diamond in green and gold. Even the pets had their own customized designs. Star's kite was a bright yellow 'lemon' shape (to remind her of her favorite raincoat), and Pinkysan's kite was, of course, a delicate pink triangle.
Pinkysan, the brave cat, was fascinating with her small kite spool. She used her tiny paws to pat the string as Lyn let it out. Star, however, couldn't wait to run. She bounded across the wide green ground, her tongue lolling out in a huge, happy dog smile as she felt the fresh wind.
The wind was strong today. It was a powerful, invisible hand, and it lifted the colorful paper shapes into the blue sky instantly.
"Wow! They are so fast!" Lyn laughed. She and Linda both used their spools, making their kites dance between the falling sakura petals. Star barked with joy as her little yellow 'lemon' kite soared high, the string tugging at her harness. Even Pinkysan watched her small kite flutter, her green eyes wide with concentration. It was the happiest spring day they had ever shared.
But spring wind is powerful. Suddenly, the wind changed direction. Wooooosh! It blew through the center of the park, pulling the strings with a mighty force. Before Star could even react, the wind snatched her kite. With a single, powerful tug, the line went slack. The yellow lemon kite plummeted, its string becoming wrapped around the highest, twistiest branch of the oldest and largest sakura tree in the park. It was completely stuck.
Star’s happy barking stopped instantly. She dropped her twine, sat at the bottom of the tree, and let out a soft, heartbreaking whimper. She looked up at her beautiful, lemon kite, now tangled in the pink blossoms, far beyond her reach. Pinkysan trotted over and gently touched Star’s paw with her nose, trying to comfort her "big sister."
Lyn saw the sadness on her pet's face and stopped her own kite immediately. "Linda, hold this for a moment," Lyn said. She carefully unwrapped her own sakura kite string and placed the spool directly into the paw of the sad Shiba Inu.
"Don’t be sad, Star," Lyn whispered, crouching down and hugging her close. "You don't need a lemon kite. You can fly my sakura kite! It is much prettier and fits your new dress perfectly."
Linda and Lyn watched from the wide ground, cheering, as Star’s happy "woof!" returned. Lyn’s sakura kite was now Star's kite, and it danced high in the spring sky, powered by the love and teamwork of her family. Star ran across the park, her pink dress fluttering and the kite soaring, while Lyn and Pinkysan cheered the loud, happy chase.
