The Golden Week Shell Seekers
Golden Week was in full swing, and the weather in Nara was perfect—bright, warm, and breezy. The city was crowded with holiday travelers, so Lyn decided it was time for a quick escape to the fresh air of the coast.
"Let’s go to the sea shore!" Lyn announced. "We can collect kai-gara (sea shells) to decorate the house and the garden. Everyone can help!"
The group prepared quickly. Lyn was dressed perfectly for the beach in a white beach dress and a wide blue beach hat that kept her familiar bangs shaded. Linda was ready for some serious walking in a comfy pink t-shirt and light blue maong shorts.
But the real stars were the pets! Star, the Akita Inu, looked incredibly charming in a new maong (denim) jumper, her tail already wagging. Pinkysan, the calico, was a little hesitant, but she trotted over to Lyn, her favorite beach bandana secured around her neck.
They packed the blue hatchback with four large, clear plastic bags for their treasures and began the scenic drive. When they arrived, the view was breathtaking. The sky was brilliant blue, and the ocean stretched forever, sparkling with sunlight.
As soon as their feet hit the sand, the hunt began.
"Look, Linda!" Lyn called, pointing. "This one is as big as my hand! It will look perfect in the living room display case." Lyn carefully placed a large, smooth whelk shell into her clear bag.
Star and Pinkysan had their own method of collecting. They began pushing smaller, colorful shells around with their noses. Tap, tap! Star pushed a yellow shell with her nose toward Pinkysan. Whack! Pinkysan batted it back with a small paw. Linda burst out laughing.
"They are playing 'Shell Soccer'!" she giggled, crouching down to join them.
Linda’s bag was soon filled with thousands of tiny, colorful periwinkle and clam shells. "These are perfect for the rock path in the garden," she explained.
They spent the whole afternoon walking, laughing, and enjoying the salty air. Their four plastic bags were heavy with beautiful treasures. By late afternoon, everyone was happy, dusty with sand, and very hungry.
Lyn picked up a tired Pinkysan, and they walked back to the car.
"I think we need a snack," Lyn smiled, driving toward the main road.
"Yes! Look, a drive-thru!" Linda pointed to a familiar bright sign.
They pulled into the line. Lyn leaned out and placed a large order. A few minutes later, she rolled up the window, handed a paper bag to Linda, and drove to a quiet spot overlooking the coast. Linda pulled out big burgers, crispy fries, and tall cups of sweet drinks. Star sat very patiently in the back, her Akita eyes wide, waiting for an "accidental" french fry.
Chomp, gulp, purr. They enjoyed their meal in the warm car, surrounded by the smell of fries and the soft sound of Pinkysan’s contented purrs.
When they finally arrived home, the sun was beginning to set.
"Okay, Team Shell, let’s go to work!" Lyn declared.
It was time to decorate. In the garden, the ground was Covered in the purple and white hydrangeas Linda loved. Linda knelt down and began carefully pressing the tiny shells from her bag into the soil around the path. Pinkysan watched with fascination, gently moving a tiny pink shell with her nose to "help" Linda. Protect! Pinkysan thought, keeping the beautiful new garden decorations safe from imaginary birds.
Inside the cozy house, Lyn arranged her large white shells on the wooden shelves. Star sat tall next to the display, her nose covered in dirt and sand from the garden where she had helped dig a "very important" hole earlier. The house was now sparkling with the simple, beautiful gifts from the sea. They were a family, and they had made their home a perfect Golden Week treasure.
