The rainy day game
It was a Saturday morning, but the sun was nowhere to be seen. Instead, the sky was a heavy, dark gray, and big raindrops tapped against the windows. Pitter-patter, pitter-patter.
"We cannot go to the garden today, everyone," Lyn said with a small sigh. She was wearing a cozy white cardigan and sitting on the sofa, trying to watch a movie on TV. "It is far too wet outside for a walk."
Star and Pinkysan were not happy. They sat by the glass door, watching the puddles grow in the garden. They were very bored. Star let out a long, dramatic yawn and lay down on the rug. But Pinkysan, the clever calico kitten, wasn't ready to nap. Her green eyes scanned the living room. Suddenly, she had a brilliant idea. She wanted to play a game of Hide and Seek!
Without a sound, Pinkysan turned around and sprinted toward the back of the house. She ran into Lyn’s bedroom, where the air smelled like lavender. She spotted Lyn’s large wooden dresser—a chest of drawers where all the warm clothes were kept. One of the middle drawers was open just a tiny crack.
Pinkysan wiggled her nose. With a quick jump, she squeezed her small body through the opening. She found herself in a mountain of soft wool. She crawled deep under a beautiful, fluffy pink sweater. Titter, titter! Pinkysan made a tiny, muffled laughing sound. She was completely invisible!
A few minutes later, Star realized the room was too quiet. She stood up and began to search. First, she trotted into the kitchen. Sniff, sniff. She checked behind the trash can and under the table. No Pinkysan. Next, she went into the bathroom. Sniff, sniff. she looked behind the shower curtain. No Pinkysan.
Star began to feel truly worried. What if her little sister had found a way outside into the rain? She began to run through the house. Thump, thump, thump! Her big paws made a loud noise on the wooden floor.
Lyn couldn't hear her movie anymore. "Star! Please be quiet, girl," Lyn called out. "I'm trying to listen to the TV!"
But Star did not stop. she ran into the living room, grabbed the edge of Lyn’s sleeve with her teeth, and gently pulled. Her eyes were wide and anxious.
"Okay, okay, I understand," Lyn laughed, standing up. "You can't find Pinkysan, can you? I will help you look. Let's be detectives!"
Lyn and Star began the search together. They looked in the closet and under the bed. Finally, they entered the bedroom. Star’s nose began to twitch rapidly. She walked straight to the dresser and pointed her nose at the middle drawer. She let out a small, soft "woof."
Lyn reached out and slowly pulled the drawer open. She was shocked! There, sitting right in the middle of her favorite pink cashmere sweater, was Pinkysan. The kitten had bits of white fuzz on her ears and a very proud look on her face.
"Mew!" Pinkysan said cheerfully, as if to say, "I win!"
"You naughty, clever kitten!" Lyn said, reaching in to tickle Pinkysan's belly. "You picked the softest spot in the whole house!"
Star’s tail began to wag so hard it hit the side of the dresser with a happy thud-thud-thud. She had found her best friend. Lyn picked up the kitten and hugged her, while Star licked Pinkysan’s nose. Even when the weather was gloomy and wet outside, their house was always full of sunshine and fun.
