The Sanctuary in The Storm
The afternoon sky over Japan had turned an ominous, dark charcoal color as Typhoon No. 3 slammed into the coast. Outside, the world was a chaos of howling winds and torrential rain that rattled the windowpanes relentlessly. Inside the house, Pretty Lyn—with her long light brown hair and neat bangs—sat anxiously on the living room floor. She was still wearing her favorite pink blouse and matching pajama her mind completely occupied with comforting her furry family.
Star, the loyal female Akita Inu, was trembling violently, her ears flattened against her head. Every time a bright flash of lightning illuminated the room, followed by the deep, booming roar of thunder, Star would whimper and try to dig her nose under Lyn’s arm. Pinkysan, the calico cat, wasn't doing any better; she kept lingering tightly by Lyn's side, her tail puffed up to twice its normal size in sheer fright.
"It's okay, it's okay," Lyn whispered softly, petting them both, but she knew she needed a better solution to make them feel secure.
Suddenly, an idea struck her. Lyn dashed into her bedroom and pulled her biggest, thickest duvet blanket from the closet. "Linda!" she called out. "Let's build a fortress!"
Linda, always ready to help, rushed into the living room. Together, the two friends transformed the space. They pushed the heavy sofa and two sturdy armchairs together, using them as pillars. Then, they draped the giant blanket over the top, weighing down the corners with heavy dictionaries and cushions. Within minutes, a magnificent, dark, and cozy giant blanket fort stood in the center of the room.
Lyn peeked inside the fort, which felt completely isolated from the scary world outside. "Star, Pinkysan, go inside the blanket fort," Lyn coaxed gently. "You will feel safe and comfortable in there."
Understanding her words perfectly, the two pets didn't hesitate for a second. They hurriedly crawled inside, burying themselves in the soft plush pillows. Star finally stopped shivering, and Pinkysan let out a small, grateful purr. They were incredibly thankful for Lyn's creative effort to keep them safe.
To make things even cozier, Linda walked into the kitchen and prepared four steaming mugs of hot chocolate. She brought them into the fort, and the four of them huddled together inside the fabric sanctuary, sipping the warm, sweet drink while the storm raged overhead. The rich chocolate instantly chased away the damp chill of the typhoon.
Before long, the soothing warmth of the cocoa and the secure environment did their magic. Star and Pinkysan closed their heavy eyes and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep. Lyn smiled, pulling a small television monitor closer to the fort's opening to quietly watch her favorite show, while Linda slipped out to quietly tidy up the kitchen.
By nightfall, the fierce howling of the wind finally died down to a whisper. The typhoon had passed. Lyn crawled out of the fort and opened the sliding glass door to step onto the terrace. As she looked out into the darkness, she gasped in shock.
The garden was a mess. One of her favorite young trees had completely fallen over, its roots exposed, and several of her beautifully nurtured potted plants lay shattered and destroyed across the stone path.
"What a stormy day," Lyn sighed to herself, looking at the wreckage. She knew they would have a massive cleanup project ahead of them the next morning. But as she looked back inside at her safely sleeping pets, she smiled, knowing that the most important things had been kept perfectly safe.
