Rainy Season Science :The Magic of Ajisai
The rainy season (tsuyu) had officially settled over Japan, bringing its characteristic grey skies and gentle, consistent drizzle. For Pretty Lyn, however, the damp weather meant her garden was more beautiful than ever. It was hydrangea (ajisai) season, and the garden was blooming profusely in vibrant clusters of blue, pink, and purple.
Lyn, her light brown hair neatly styled with bangs and wearing a blue-green ruffled short-sleeve blouse with a denim maong skirt, was happily watering her beloved ajisai with a small watering can. She wasn’t just watering them; she was nurturing her family. Beside her stood Star, the energetic female Akita Inu, and Pinkysan, the mischievous calico cat. Both pets were adorably dressed in little denim jumper outfits, watching Lyn with curious eyes.
"It's amazing, isn't it, Star? Pinkysan?" Lyn asked, smiling as she tended to a particularly large blue bloom. "Ajisai are like magic flowers."
Star tilted her head, her brown eyes widening in amazement. Pinkysan meowed softly, looking surprised by Lyn's comment. They both loved the garden, but they didn't know it held secrets.
"You see," Lyn explained, "These flowers change their colors. They aren't always blue or pink forever. It all depends on what’s in the soil where they are planted."
The pets listened intensely as Lyn explained the science. She told them that ajisai flowers act like natural litmus paper. When the soil is acidic, the plants absorb aluminum easily, which causes the flowers to bloom in deep blues. However, if the soil is alkaline (less acidic), the aluminum remains trapped in the earth, resulting in soft pink flowers. Often, in a varied garden, you might see purple flowers, which means the soil acidity is changing right there!
The news delighted the animals. They thought the flowers simply were their colors. Learning they could change based on their environment was thrilling. With tails wagging and paws happy, Star and Pinkysan began happily running around the large ajisai bushes, playing a game of tag among the scientific wonders.
Suddenly, Pinkysan, ever the agile cat, leaped gracefully onto the sturdy top branches of a vibrant blue ajisai bush. She didn't just stand there; she carefully plucked a large, perfectly formed cluster of blue blossoms and held it high above her small head like a lovely crown.
Looking down at everyone with a proud purr, Pinkysan declared: "I'm pretty with ajisai flowers!"
Everyone in the garden—Lyn, the flowers, the fireflies beginning to glow—all smiled at Pinkysan’s playful confidence. Just then, Linda, Lyn's close friend, arrived, carrying snacks. Seeing the scene, Linda laughed heartily. She set down her bags, stepped into the garden, and warmly hugged the calico cat, still holding her blue blooms.
"You're indeed pretty, Pinkysan!" Linda said happily, nuzzling the cat.
Lyn looked at the joyful gathering. She smiled warmly and embraced Star, who nuzzled her wet nose into Lyn’s shoulder.
"You're also pretty, both of you," Lyn whispered affectionately, hugging Star tightly. "Star, Pinkysan... you are my family, and I love you both the most!"
The four friends laughed together in the gentle rain, surrounded by the magical, color-changing ajisai and the warmth of love.
